Unless you live in a hole somewhere, I know you have heard about the “big roll-out” of timeline for Facebook Pages which began last week. Facebook also announced that all pages will default to the new timeline on March 30th.
So are you ready? If you have a facebook page you need to pay attention and, that’s what I spent most of my week doing. Making changes to accommodate the new timeline for two of my own pages and a few that I created and manage for clients. Here is one of the new cover images I created which features one of my fav quotes (I am working on some really kewl covers so this is just a place holder for the time being):
“Embracing The New Timeline For Facebook Pages” takes a look at some of the new features and what you should be doing in preparation for the coming change. (Hopefully, even if you have already upgraded, this article will provide some insight).
Although the reaction to the new timeline for Facebook pages has been mixed, I am personally beginning to see the possibilities that the many new features bring for business.
I am especially excited about three of the features that come with the new timeline:
- pinned posts
As you can see from the image above, (which has dimensions of 815 x 315 on FB) you pretty much have a blank canvas to create a great billboard. Bear in mind that your profile image by default, will sit at the bottom left of your cover. (dimensions for the profile is now 180 x 180 and scales to 32 x 32) .
Some important things to know about your cover image.
It cannot include:
- price or purchase information such as “45% off” or “download it at our website”
- contact info such as a web address, email, mailing address or info etc
- references to FB features or actions such as “like” or “share” or any arrows pointing from the cover photo to any of these features
- call to action such as “get it now” or “tell your friends”
In other words, FB has completely shut down your ability to blatantly advertise on your cover. But don’t don’t be discouraged, there are still many ways you can creatively use this feature. I will be sharing more on this in a future article.
The other feature that I love is the tabs that now appear just below your cover image (these used to be along the left side of your page and were not as visible). These can be linked to different apps and images can be customized. (the dimensions are 111 x 74 on FB). Take a look at two of my pages to see how you can make this area of your page pop! While you’re there, go ahead and like my pages if you have not already done so. (Thanks much!)
The third feature I am liking is the ability to “Pin” a post to the top of my page, for up to seven days at a time. This gives you the ability to reintroduce a post without having to repeat it and is a great way to push your selected content to a place off prominence on your timeline.
There are some other great features and I will share more about some of them shortly.
In the meantime, in case you missed it, here is a video about the new timeline that I created and sent to you last week.
To your online success!
