If this saying is true, then surely small businesses must be saying something!
Although some people, as it relates to social media and internet marketing, tend to view small businesses with less “respect” than our larger counterparts. That however does not reflect the reality that small businesses are able to do big things, especially given the many tools and its endless possibilities that continue to be introduced to the marketplace.
Often, people make the mistake of thinking that large numbers of followers and connections always equals huge success or, that without large numbers you are wasting your time. The truth is, in study after study, as it turns out, businesses and “solopreneurs” with large or small numbers are experiencing similar levels of success.
This is so because, in many instances, many big brands and “gurus” with large numbers of followers usually have less targeted audiences following them. Think about how many pages and profile you have liked or followed but seldom engage with or have never taken a single action beyond the initial connection. On the other hand, smaller brands and service providers tend to have connections that are more targeted and often more engaged with their brand. In other words, as a small business owner, you should be more focused on quality than quantity!
Clearly, none of this matters if you neglect to engage with your connections on a regular basis and do not provide meaningful and useful information to your community.
Here are 3 things to encourage engagement from your connections and increase your opportunity to convert:
- post to your profiles at least once every day. There are many tools available that allow you to schedule updates in advance so you never have an excuse not to stay engaged.
- always ask your connections to do what you want. e.g. “share this picture”, “like this post”, “tweet this link”, “fill out this form” etc. But, be careful you use a mixture of content that will not leave your connections feeling underserved, based on what you promise them in your profile.
- respond to comments within 24 hours. Remember, if you neglect to communicate with your audience and they get POed, they will not only let you know, but they will broadcast their annoyance to your entire audience!
Although these three things alone may not give you the level of success in social media that you want, without a doubt, they will certainly increase your chances of succeeding.
To your online success!
